SDCC: New Books To Be Announced at Oni Press Panel -- Sat. 7/26

I'll be joining the big Oni Press panel this Saturday at Comic-con to announce not one, but two new, original comics I'll be writing and releasing through Oni next year. I've been working (along with my talented co-conspirators) to get these projects going for a while now and I'm very excited to get the news out.

SDCC has the following description of the Oni Panel in their programming guide:

5:00-6:00 Oni Press Panelmonium 2008!-- The most fun you'll ever have at a panel! See what all the hubbub is about at indy comics powerhouse Oni Press. Get sneak peeks at upcoming projects, news on new Oni Press initiatives, and Q&A with some of your favorite Oni Press creators. Oh, and did we mention prizes? There's going to be prizes and free comics, so come one, come all! It's panda--er, Panelmonium! Room 3

San Diego Comic-con Bound

I'll be attending the San Diego Comic-con this coming weekend with a bit of news breaking on not one, but three original comics titles as the con rolls on.

At least I hope so! The run up to Comic-con is always comprised of half the time needed to get everything I want to get done done and getting all the business stuff done before this weekend is going to be a Herculean effort.

But watch this space. Very excited about what's been happening in the background over these past few months...

R.I.P. Stan Winston

An afternoon swing by Ain't It Cool News delivered terrible news. Stan Winston is dead and that's just horrible.

I had a chance to tour Stan's creature shop during and after their work re-designing the Tooth Fairy on DARKNESS FALLS. I've been on many movie sets and to every sort of fan convention imaginable. I've been to Disney World and Six Flags, World Series clinchers and ticker tape parades. But I don't think I've ever seen anything cooler than Stan Winston's creature shop, up close and personal.

I only got to meet Stan a couple of times, but they each had that sort of charge I can only associate with the times I've met Bill Clinton and Stan Lee. A fucking giant of his profession and an old school movie maker and innovator.

My thoughts are with his friends and family.

Check out Stan Winston's IMDB profile for a list of his many startling and visionary achievements.

Happy Father's Day!

I have my father to thank for a love of horror movies. We were the first house in the neighborhood to have a vcr (Betamax or otherwise) and I was fortunate to have parents who not only brought home all the great movies we remember so well... the FRIDAY THE 13TH series, HALLOWEEN, Larry Cohen's movies, I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE!, MY BLOODY VALENTINE, PHANTASM and on and on and on... but who also watched these films, loved them, and seemed to have no real concern over letting my siblings and I watch them over and over and over again.

In honor of Father's Day, my assembled family just watched the opening chapter of Stephen King and George Romero's CREEPSHOW together.

God, I loved this stuff when I was a kid. Over and over, I wore that VHS tape down...

Just a quick update to apologize for lack of postings. I've been underground, deep in the bunker, writing. 2008 has been a very transitional and busy year and I'm going to be announcing a slew of new projects as the summer gets going, including creator-owned comics and graphic novels, new super-hero books at a major publisher and more.

But first I have to finish writing. Always with the needing to finish writing, this one.

I'm going back under. Stay tuned.

The Nightmare Factory Vol. 2: Coming This Fall!

We were handing out this promo card at the New York Comic-Con last weekend, so I guess the cat is out of the bag. Just like the first volume from Fox Atomic Comics and Harper Collins, I've written two stories based on the works of Thomas Ligotti:

"Gas Station Carnivals" with Vasilis Lolos illustrating and "The Clown Puppet" with the legendary Bill Sienkiewicz!

I'm very excited for this book's release. The first volume of THE NIGHTMARE FACTORY was beautiful and I learned a lot while making it. This new collection is going to be top-shelf fucking stellar.

MoveOn.Org's "Obama in 30 Seconds" Ad Competition

Check out my friend Tamra's spot she made for MoveOn.org's "Obama in 30 Seconds" ad competition. She's been making great docs for a while now, won the documentary grand prize at last year's Berlin Film Festival and has been my friend for a long time:

I think, considering the demographic split between Obama's and Senator Clinton's support among Democrats and the general, well, generality most of the spots on the MoveOn site seem to convey, this is top-notch.
