What's so great about being human?

That's the first question I asked myself when WildStorm asked if I'd be interested in working on a revamp of CYBERNARY- a radical re-thinking of the character first created by Nick Manabat and recently changed by Tommy Yune in last year's WILDSTORM THUNDERBOOK. I wasn't sure what to say. It's not that I don't dig robot stories. Quite the contrary. I really dig robot stories. I just wanted to do one differently.

We've been writing about artificial beings who strive to be human for what feels like forever and I'm sick of it. What's so great about being human? We bleed too easily. We think too much for our own good. We let things like jealousy, desire, ambition, and need cloud our thinking and hold us back. Humans.... If robots knew what was good for 'em, they wouldn't touch the stuff. Meet the Mechajin - the cybernetic underclass of what passes for Gamorra Island these days. They're tired of serving when they should be ruling. There's a war brewing out there. The regular people aren't perceptive enough to see it. But the Mechajin see it all too clearly. All they've been waiting for was a leader. All we've done is give them one. Join the brilliant Eric Canete and myself this summer for a tale of evolution, revolution, and outright war. You know what happens when meat meets metal? Meat bleeds.

Humans had their chance. (from Wildstorm News in August 2001).
